Our May KIPPster of the Month is Jovani Olvera, a KIPP Intrepid '14 Alumn attending Kenyon College in Ohio.
Major: Sociology.
Favorite College Experience: Getting to see my favorite norteño groups Duelo and Intocable with my best friend. Not only were these my first concerts but the experience of having to plan and travel outside of home was exciting.
College Challenge: Attending a predominantly white institution (PWI) at a rural college is very exhausting. I luckily found a friend group I cherish that are from Houston as well. They have supported me through everything. Being involved with the people of color (POC) community on campus has also helped me cope with my feelings of inferiority on campus.
Goals: I wish to have a better understanding of my career interests. My interests are oriented towards social work but that is a wide range still. Before I graduate I wish to have a concrete plan or specific career for which I will pursue.
Stress Management Practice: On difficult days I choose to relax by playing games on my Nintendo switch and watching anime. Going to the gym often also helps with my mental health and state of mind. I really enjoy the times when I and my friend group gather in a dorm room and joke around or support each other.
Motivational Song/Quote: Anything by Bad Bunny.
